About the Author

I’m a science geek, husband, and father of two wonderful kids. Growing up in Colorado, nature and hiking were always nearby. Living in metro Boston, I miss the dark night sky. When I was in my teens, you could drive just over the foothills and have clear seeing for watching meteor showers; now even in Colorado, the stars are less accessible.

I grew up reading Bradbury, Asimov, and Tolkien, and watching Doctor Who.

I’m a scientist, both by nature and by profession. I can’t help asking how and why. I can’t resist mysteries and puzzles wherever I find them – in nature, technology, or my son and daughter’s questions.

My professional training was in physics and astronomy, but my career ended up taking a different direction, and I ended up working in speech recognition software, and then moving to natural language understanding and data science. I rely on Ars Technica to keep up with advances in physics and astronomy, as well as biology and the environment.
